"Unless he has a natural genius for photography and is willing to practice his *ss off, I very much doubt that.
My experience is that the poster you criticize is in fact correct: the best (and most popular) pictures in my own stream were taken with the D50 and the D80, and using "amateur" lenses under conditions even an 18-55mm kit lens would shine in. Buying a D300 and lots of expensive lenses when one only reluctantly wishes to read the manual - and probably doesn't even know diffraction from chromatic aberration - is simply financial folly: you might as well suggest it makes sense for a rank beginner to pick up a 1Ds Mk III and expect to be cranking out Vogue magazine editorials within a few months ..."
I'm tempted to go back and find posts from when I showed up here six months ago. But maybe you are right, maybe I'm putting to much stock into my own personal experience. I guess my point is not to discourage people in that way. I was told to get a D80 or just stick with my D50 and buy more lenses, which in my case would have been a total disaster.
Anyhow, really great thread for beginners.
